Clearing Error 5100 (Carriage Path Obstruction)

Eliminate carriage movement errors caused by paper scraps or smudges on the transparent encoder film.

Important: The instructions below apply to standard Canon series printers. Always disconnect power cables before reaching inside internal paper paths or hardware assemblies.

Recommended Resolution Steps

  1. 1

Turn off the printer, unplug the power cable, and open the main scanning unit cover.

  2. 2

Check the entire width of the carriage track for crumpled paper, staples, or packing foam.

  3. 3

Find the thin, clear plastic timing strip (encoder film) stretched horizontally behind the ink carriage.

  4. 4

Carefully wipe both sides of the clear strip with a dry, lint-free cloth—avoid pulling or bending the strip.

  5. 5

Close the cover, plug the printer back in, and run a nozzle check to confirm the carriage moves smoothly.
